Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz – other models: the collective page of Magirus-Deutz trucks with air-cooled diesels outside the named ranges, 7,927 to 9,500 cm³ displacement, six-cylinder, 4,535 to 11,490 kg unladen weight

Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz (KHD), based in Cologne, was formed in 1938 from the merger of the Deutz engine works with the commercial-vehicle maker Magirus and built trucks under the Magirus-Deutz name with Deutz's characteristic air-cooled diesel engines, which needed no cooling water or radiator. Type designations mostly followed a scheme of engine power in hp plus abbreviations for cab and drive, F standing for a forward-control cab, D for diesel; in 1975 the truck division was absorbed into the newly formed Iveco group. This page gathers the Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz types the register could not assign to a named range.

The register lists here 6 versions with displacements from 7,927 to 9,500 cm³, all six-cylinder, unladen weights from 4,535 to 11,490 kg, gross weights from 7,400 to 13,000 kg, lengths from 6,850 to 9,600 mm and widths from 2,300 to 2,450 mm.

The air-cooled diesel engine freed Magirus-Deutz trucks from dependence on cooling water, making them especially sought after in hot, dusty regions such as North Africa and the Middle East, while in European construction and long-haul transport they held a firm place alongside Mercedes-Benz and MAN.

On these trucks, the cooling-air ducting and the condition of the air-cooled engine's cylinder heads, frame and cab corrosion, the brake system and axles all matter, along with parts availability, which today runs mainly through Iveco-Magirus specialists and clubs.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
