The Żuk was built from 1959 at the Polish commercial-vehicle plant in Lublin as a light van for freight and passenger transport and stayed in production until 1998 – one of the longest-running commercial-vehicle ranges of the former Eastern Bloc. The name means "beetle" in Polish and covered panel-van, flatbed and minibus bodies on a shared chassis from the start. The designations A 1507, A 15M, A06 and GBL held in the register mark individual versions across the model's long history. Throughout production a four-cylinder engine of 2,120cc powered the vehicles.

For decades the Żuk was the backbone of Polish commercial transport and was exported beyond Poland to other Eastern Bloc states and to Western Europe. As a panel van it served tradesmen and the postal service, as a minibus it served rural passenger transport; its simple engineering made it easy to repair and durable even on difficult roads.
