The AS series of Josef Bautz AG from Saulgau in Upper Swabia comprised eleven closely related types from the AS 120 to the AS 240, built in the 1950s and 1960s; the number in the type orders the power class. Bautz was taken over by Fendt in 1966. Like other compact tractor makers of the time, Bautz competed mainly on price and simple technology rather than engine power or comfort.

The register lists 11 versions with 8.8 to 12.4 kW from one- to two-cylinder diesel engines of 905 to 1,304 cm³ displacement. Unladen weights range from 1,070 to 1,310 kg, lengths from 2,345 to 2,725 mm, widths from 1,380 to 1,590 mm and heights from 1,500 to 1,660 mm.
Like the related AL series, the AS series was also aimed at smallholdings in Upper Swabia and southern Germany; the many closely staggered types allowed fine grading by farm size and budget. For buyers on a tight budget, the fine grading of AS series types offered the chance to choose exactly the power class the farm actually needed.
When buying used, what counts is the condition and compression of the diesel, clutch and gearbox, the tightness of the hydraulics, and corrosion on panels; wheel bearings and steering linkage on these light chassis are also worth checking. Parts for this rare brand are usually only available through Bautz specialists and donor vehicles.
