The M3KP 180MLB 8 from ABB is a three-phase induction motor. The rated output is 7.5 kW. The motor is eight-pole, which at 50 Hz gives a synchronous speed of 750 rpm. The housing is frame size 180. The protection class is IP55, IP56 and IP65. The efficiency is 88.1 per cent at full load, 87.3 per cent at 75 per cent load and 84.8 per cent at half load. Mounting arrangements to IEC 60034-7: B3, B5, B8, B35, V1, V3, V5 and V6. Stated countries of manufacture: Finland and Poland. The values are recorded in the Australian MEPS registration under the GEMS Determination 2012; measured to IEC 60034-2-1 (Edition 2.0). Rated output across the ABB range ranges from 0.75 to 185 kW; the M3KP 180MLB 8 sits at the bottom of that range with 7.5 kW. Its immediate neighbours are the M3MA 132LA 4 below it with 5.5 kW and the M3AA 132SMF 4 above it with 9.2 kW. 2143 ABB models across 2 series are on record. The model is listed under Electric motors. 24 verified figures from 1 source are on file.

ABB M3KP – flameproof motors with an Ex e terminal box (Ex de): the difference from the M3JP, frame sizes 80 to 355, 0.75 to 185 kW

M3KP is the twin of the flameproof M3JP with one decisive difference: the terminal box is not flameproof but built in the 'increased safety' protection type (Ex e, today Ex eb). The combination is called Ex de – flameproof motor enclosure, increased-safety connection space. That makes installation much easier, because the cable entry no longer has to pass through flameproof glands, and it is the more common execution for zone 1 in Europe. The letter K in the type code stands for exactly this design at ABB.

Otherwise the type code reads like all process motors: IEC frame size, frame length, number of poles, winding variant. The register lists 202 versions from frame size 80 to 355 with 0.75 to 185 kW, two- to eight-pole; full-load efficiencies run from 75.3 to 97.2 %, protection from IP55 to IP66, rated voltages are recorded as 415 to 690 V. Manufacturing locations per registration: mainly India, Poland, China and Finland.

That M3JP and M3KP coincide in output, frame size and efficiency is no accident: motor and winding are identical, only the connection space differs. The choice follows plant practice – Ex de is easier to wire, Ex d more compact.

When replacing, protection type, gas group, temperature class and certificate must match the installation; the Ex e terminals require approved cable entries, and inverter duty is permitted only with explicit certification.

Frequently asked questions

How much power does the ABB M3KP 180MLB 8 have?

The ABB M3KP 180MLB 8 delivers 7.5 kW.

What to check before buying

  • Match the data plate against the order: frame size, mounting and rating have to agree.
  • Check the ingress rating against the installation site — outdoors or in dust the demands differ.
  • Hold the mounting form and dimensions against the existing seat before ordering.
  • The pole count sets the speed — when replacing an older unit, compare this first.
  • For used units, ask about winding condition and bearing play.
  • Ask about parts availability for this series — the running costs hang on it.
