M3JP is ABB's flameproof motor for zones 1 and 2 – areas where an explosive gas atmosphere is to be expected in normal operation. The protection type Ex d (Ex db under the newer standard) rests on a principle from mining: the enclosure is so strong, and the gaps at shaft and end shields so narrow and long, that an ignition inside is withstood and the flame cannot propagate outward.
