The ABB M3JP 160MLA 4 is a three-phase induction motor built by ABB. The rated output is 11 kW. The motor is four-pole, which at 50 Hz gives a synchronous speed of 1,500 rpm. The housing is frame size 160. The protection class is IP55, IP56, IP65 and IP66. The efficiency is 92.3 per cent at full load, 92.9 per cent at 75 per cent load and 92.6 per cent at half load. Mounting arrangements to IEC 60034-7: B3, B5, B8, B35, V1, V3, V5 and V6. Stated countries of manufacture: India, Poland, China and Finland. The values are recorded in the Australian MEPS registration under the GEMS Determination 2019; measured to IEC 60034-2-1 (Edition 2.0). Rated output across the ABB range ranges from 0.75 to 185 kW; the M3JP 160MLA 4 sits at the bottom of that range with 11 kW. Its immediate neighbours are the M3AA132MBA4HO below it with 9.2 kW and the M2AA200 above it with 15 kW. 2143 ABB models across 2 series are on record. The model is listed under Electric motors. 22 verified figures from 1 source are on file.

ABB M3JP – flameproof motors (Ex d) for zone 1: cast-iron frame, frame sizes 80 to 355, 0.75 to 185 kW

M3JP is ABB's flameproof motor for zones 1 and 2 – areas where an explosive gas atmosphere is to be expected in normal operation. The protection type Ex d (Ex db under the newer standard) rests on a principle from mining: the enclosure is so strong, and the gaps at shaft and end shields so narrow and long, that an ignition inside is withstood and the flame cannot propagate outward. The letter J in the type code marks exactly this flameproof execution with a cast-iron frame at ABB; the sister type M3KP adds a terminal box in increased safety (Ex de).

The rest of the type code follows the process motor: IEC frame size, frame length (S, M, L), number of poles, plus H or L for the winding variant. The register holds 197 versions from frame size 80 to 355, 0.75 to 185 kW, two- to eight-pole, with full-load efficiencies from 75.3 to 97.2 % and protection from IP55 to IP66; rated voltages are recorded as 415 to 690 V, manufacturing locations mainly Finland, Poland, India and China.

The figures largely match the M3BP because the active part is the same – the difference lies in the enclosure, which is heavier and more expensive and whose flame paths must not be damaged during maintenance. Certification under ATEX and IECEx states gas group (IIB or IIC) and temperature class.

When buying: Ex d motors may only be operated with certified accessories (cable glands, terminal box), inverter duty needs an explicit release, and any repair to the enclosure requires a certified Ex workshop.

Frequently asked questions

How much power does the ABB M3JP 160MLA 4 have?

The ABB M3JP 160MLA 4 delivers 11 kW.

What to check before buying

  • Match the data plate against the order: frame size, mounting and rating have to agree.
  • Check the ingress rating against the installation site — outdoors or in dust the demands differ.
  • Hold the mounting form and dimensions against the existing seat before ordering.
  • The pole count sets the speed — when replacing an older unit, compare this first.
  • For used units, ask about winding condition and bearing play.
  • Ask about parts availability for this series — the running costs hang on it.
