The M3AA series from ABB includes the M3AA 200MLB 4. The rated output is 37 kW. The motor is four-pole, which at 50 Hz gives a synchronous speed of 1,500 rpm. The housing is frame size 200. The protection class is IP55, IP56, IP65 and IP66. The efficiency is 93.7 per cent at full load, 94.3 per cent at 75 per cent load and 94.3 per cent at half load. Mounting arrangements to IEC 60034-7: B3, B5, B8, B35, V1, V3, V5 and V6. Stated countries of manufacture: Sweden, Poland, Finland and China. The data is based on the Australian MEPS registration under the GEMS Determination 2012; measured to IEC 60034-2-1 (Edition 2.0). The M3AA series covers 200 models. Rated output within it ranges from 0.75 to 90 kW; the M3AA 200MLB 4 sits in the middle of that range with 37 kW. Its immediate neighbours are the M3AA/BP 250 SMA 8 below it with 30 kW and the M3AA 200MLC 2K above it with 45 kW. 2141 ABB models across 12 series are on record.

ABB M3AA – aluminium motors for general machine building: frame sizes 80 to 280, 0.75 to 90 kW, light instead of heavy

M3AA is ABB's three-phase motor with an aluminium frame – the series for general machine building, pump and fan makers, materials handling and packaging machinery, where low weight and price matter. The type code follows ABB's system: M for motor, 3 for the generation, A for aluminium, A for 'general performance'. Then come the IEC frame size (shaft height in millimetres), frame length (S, M, L with letters A to F) and number of poles; trailing letters such as E or K denote winding and efficiency variants.

The register lists 200 versions from frame size 80 to 280 with rated outputs from 0.75 to 90 kW, two- to eight-pole. Full-load efficiencies lie between 74.8 and 95.9 %, protection is at least IP55 and mostly available up to IP66, and mounting arrangements run from B3 through B5, B14 and B35 to the vertical V1 to V6. The recorded weights of 10.5 to 325 kg show the advantage of the aluminium frame over the cast-iron sibling M3BP, which is noticeably heavier in the same frame size. Manufacturing locations per registrations: Finland, Poland, India, China and Spain.

The limit lies at frame size 280 and 90 kW – above that ABB builds only in cast iron. Aluminium is corrosion-resistant but more sensitive to mechanical impact and chemically aggressive atmospheres, and the lower mass limits the permissible radial and axial forces on the shaft.

When replacing, shaft height, flange dimension and mounting to IEC 60072 are the decisive figures; the efficiency class to IEC 60034-30 (IE2 or IE3) determines whether the motor may still be placed on the market in the EU today.

Frequently asked questions

How much power does the ABB M3AA 200MLB 4 have?

The ABB M3AA 200MLB 4 delivers 37 kW.

What to check before buying

  • Match the data plate against the order: frame size, mounting and rating have to agree.
  • Check the ingress rating against the installation site — outdoors or in dust the demands differ.
  • Hold the mounting form and dimensions against the existing seat before ordering.
  • The pole count sets the speed — when replacing an older unit, compare this first.
  • For used units, ask about winding condition and bearing play.
  • Ask about parts availability for this series — the running costs hang on it.
