Magirus-Deutz was a truck maker based in Ulm, known for air-cooled V-configuration Deutz diesel engines that needed no cooling water; in 1975 the company became part of the Iveco merger. The FM range was a cab-over truck for the medium weight segment; model names such as FM 130 D 7 FA or FM 170 D 11 FA state the payload or weight class, the diesel engine and the number of axles or frame variant. The company name goes back to Conrad Dietrich Magirus, who founded a fire-equipment factory in Ulm in 1864 from which the Magirus truck maker later emerged; the Deutz suffix came from the engine partnership with the Cologne-based firm Deutz.
