Diesel particulate filter with differential pressure and soot sensors: function, part-number assignment and replacement checks
The diesel particulate filter sits downstream of the oxidation catalyst and retains the solid soot particles in the exhaust gas. A ceramic honeycomb substrate with alternately plugged channels forces the exhaust through porous channel walls (wall-flow principle), so soot builds up as a filter cake. A differential pressure sensor measures the pressure drop across the filter as the basis for calculating soot loading, often complemented by a downstream soot sensor.
The part number is tied to the filter volume, the cell density of the honeycomb substrate, the layout of the differential pressure ports and sensor bores, and to the regeneration strategy programmed for the particular engine family. With every emission stage and model year, housing geometry, coating and sensor position change, so filters that look alike are not necessarily interchangeable. The assignment of part numbers on this page comes from official certification documentation issued by the US Environmental Protection Agency.
A gradual rise in backpressure from ash accumulation is the filter's normal ageing pattern: unlike soot, mineral ash from oil additives cannot be removed by regeneration and permanently narrows the channels. Frequent or incomplete regenerations favour thermal cracking of the substrate; a blocked differential pressure sensor produces incorrect loading readings and triggers limp-home modes. Increased fuel consumption, falling power and an illuminated warning lamp are typical consequences.
Replacement is governed by the part number rather than the outward shape of the housing, since several engine families use filters that look almost identical but differ internally. Checks should cover the flange gaskets, clamp connections, the patency of the differential pressure lines, and the sensor connectors for corrosion. After replacement, the control software typically requires a reset of the ash loading counter or a learning drive. Pricing and availability are not part of this page.
